About me
Copy editing attends to down-and-dirty, mechanical aspects like grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
Line editing requires an artist's brush. Copy editing is part of the process, but line editing goes further to ensure word choice, style, tone, consistency, use of literary devices, and other esoteric aspects of a writer's craft create a whole greater than the sum of its parts.
Developmental editing explores plot, character development and arc, pacing, story logic, world-building, etc. This stage generally precedes copy and line editing, but can be packaged with either.
I've been a professional writer and editor for 27 years. During that span, I've written and edited everything from breaking news to award-winning newspaper and magazine features and editorials. I’ve ghostwritten several non-fiction books and performed copy, line, and developmental edits on many others. I've also performed copy, line, and developmental edits on a number of fiction manuscripts that subsequently were contracted and required only minor adjustments for in-house style. (One debut author’s comment: “My editor could not believe how clean the manuscript was.”)
My work is thorough and can seem brutal, but I try to be kind. A good editing relationship is a partnership, ideally focusing on both strengths and weaknesses. As a writer myself, I understand how personal writers’ words are, so my goal is to help clients highlight their strengths while minimizing weaknesses…without destroying self-confidence or interfering with the Muse along the way. Honest, open communication between writers and editors is paramount; therefore, I don't hesitate to explain both inline and person-to-person. I'm never farther away than a phone call, email, or instant message.
Contact me, and I'll be happy to critique the first five pages of your work at no charge so you can evaluate whether we'd be a good "fit."
